a study where an interface or component is faked by a researcher controlling it. For example, you do a study with a “chatbot”, but the chatbot is actually just a researcher

A similar idea is “body-storming” (from Game Design Research-Lankoski), where players pretend that technology is working and / or make up rules in the gaps of the unfinished rules they are given.
