Our past experiences affect how we view new experiences. My dad grew up in poverty in India whereas I grew up in wealth in America, and even the act of going to get groceries is massively modified by that difference.

Diversity is important as a way to gain perspective and have the ability to look at the same problem or event through different lenses.

I feel like a lot of accusations of hypocrisy boil down to the accuser not understanding the lenses of the accused. Similarly, many who try to change other’s minds fail to do so because they fail to understand the other's lenses.

we listen to those who empathize with us
- People who are similar to us in our lenses are more likely to change our minds.
transformational games
- Games designed to transform the player by making them learn something, see things in a different way, feel some emotion, etc. Transformational games may also seek to transform the world beyond the player, e.g. through data collection in citizen science.
target the lenses
- Oftentimes you simply cannot have an intellectual conversation with someone until you understand the way they think on a deep level. According to The Righteous Mind, people have core beliefs that the book calls moral matrices and that I call lenses. The book continues to talk about how these matrices are so fundamental that large swaths of arguments will simply fail because they don’t fit into someone’s moral matrix.
- Or, go even further and try to break down his lenses themselves. Make him question why certain people are less deserving of life than others, whether money is actually an indicator of someone’s contribution to society, and whether hierarchies are beneficial to human flourishing.
- Everything I wrote above I went through rather quickly because this isn’t a note about the minimum wage. This is a note about how to talk to people who have different lenses than you. I think it’s a very odd feeling to make arguments you don’t necessarily believe in, but are effective for your audience. I think it takes a lot of empathy and perspective.

everyone has value
- Every person looks at the world a different way, has millions of different experiences, has such incredible complexity. If consciousness is the universe experiencing itself, then every death is a death of a universe, and that is so incredibly, existentially, sad.
critical thinking
- You can come up with extremely “intelligent” arguments supporting the most heinous of things if you come in with nonsensical core assumptions. You need critical thinking to be able to analyze those assumption themselves, and realize that your arguments have no base to stand on.
